We are a rapidly growing business delivering software to biotechnology companies and biological researchers working with DNA in fields such as drug development, molecular diagnostics, microbiology and evolutionary biology.  Our software is regarded as best-in-class and is used worldwide in more than 3,000 companies, universities and research institutes.

To support our business growth, we are creating a new position for a Data Analytics Specialist to work with our corporate strategy team in our Auckland office.  We are looking for someone who will be responsible for developing information-driven insights to help identify trends and opportunities in our business and provide solutions based on these insights.  In this role you will be responsible for aggregating, transforming, validating and analysing data from various sources within our business, including customer data, product usage data from embedded analytics, financial data, business analysis and market analysis.  You will work closely with our management team across all areas of our business to improve our data collection and implementation of data analytics and reporting, in order to enhance our ability to better serve our customers and support us to make better data-driven business decisions.  A key area of focus will involve the development and implementation of data gathering and analytics for the measurement and reporting of Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) business metrics.

An additional objective, depending on the skills and experience of the successful candidate, will be to contribute your knowledge and experience to assist our software development teams to implement advanced analytics functionality for our customers as part of our product and services offerings, including statistical analysis of big data sets, complex data visualisation, and machine learning methodologies.   

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as the company’s data analytics expert.
  • Analyse and categorise data from across commercial, product, financial and business functions.
  • Implement and maintain data analytics systems across commercial, product, financial and business functions, and ensure that these systems' analytical capabilities and data gathering strategies align with corporate goals and meet existing and future business needs.
  • Understand and extract meaning from complex data relationships and develop reports to enable effective use of the resulting knowledge.
  • Provide in depth analysis of data to help us understanding customer behaviour and to direct our future product and service development.
  • Lead the development and enhancement of internal reporting based on data analytics to support business planning.
  • Identify new opportunities for data gathering to fill gaps in existing knowledge and/or enhance knowledge in order to drive higher levels of performance throughout the organisation.
  • Ensure the efficiency of data integrity, data management, productivity, and system security.
  • Continuously evaluate and analyse business needs to design, develop and improve our company’s dashboards.
  • Present complex data analyses and findings effectively to management and other team members, translating them into insights.
  • Stay up-to-date with relevant new technology.

Qualifications, Skills and Attributes

  • Tertiary education and experience in mathematics, statistics, computer science, data analytics or business analytics. Tertiary education and/or work experience in molecular biology, biotechnology or a related field would be an asset, but is not essential.
  • Strong data analysis, data verification and problem-solving abilities.
  • Familiarity with and ability to use spreadsheet and analytics software relevant to computational analysis of large datasets.
  • Able to create systems for data analysis and audit results for accuracy.
  • Advanced statistical analysis skills.
  • Good technical knowledge in database systems, structures, data mining, visualisation and reporting tools.
  • Strong presentation skills to present findings to management or other team members.
  • An understanding of Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) business metrics.
  • Ability to understand the company’s strategic direction, how decisions impact the business, and how to strive to improve organisational performance.
  • Ability to self-direct, prioritise and execute tasks.
  • Keen attention to detail.
  • Experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.
  • Flexibility and multi-tasking capability, co-ordinating work effort over numerous projects.
  • Analytical mind-set: ability to understand the story behind the data.
  • Passion to continually grow, learn and develop skills and knowledge to maximise personal contribution to company goals and ongoing career development.
